Critiques

Here's an example of a critique you may expect for your paintings when you sign up for one of my workshops. Hopefully it's balanced enough to include positive points, where to improve or take things further. I'm happy to critique two paintings per online workshop. If you would like a general critique on a portfolio of artwork please do get in touch at pics4paint@gmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you, best regards Hash

Great artworks! Very accomplished and lovely finish, I was expecting something more expressive but I can imagine they went through that stage before the fine tuning. Either way both paintings are exquisite, They do remind me of backdrops for a stage production but I mean that in the best way possible. There is a larger than life aspect to them due to the colour choices.
I’ll start with artwork 1, the more yellowish version. As mentioned, the colours and tones are lovely, the foreground works better than the top half as there’s more variations. Especially the burnt oranges, flecks of yellow, greens and purples. The top relies a little more on tonal contrasts, dark to light purple and light yellow, where you’ve melded purple and cream it works pretty well. The closest trees are great and well observed, dapples of colour elevate them further. You’ve also created a lovely sense of light, the path, the creams and purple greys for distance trees are convincing.
There are a few things I’ll mention, most predominant being the large number of lines making up the branches. The left side works better in the shaded area and allows the larger shapes to breath. There’s plenty to enjoy with other features that you could do with losing some of these detail lines.
The transitions from one colour to another also needs a little care. I like the choices they just need linking in a bit. You can do this by echoing colours into each other, so burnt orange into the purple. You don’t need loads, just dabs. Lastly, you may of ended up working in sections of the painting and perfected parts before moving on, this can create inconsistencies . One of the stand out features of your paintings at Hadleigh was how you worked everything together so keep this in mind. You may also want to restrict the time you spend on paintings to avoid this outcome.
Artwork 2
I love how striking the orange is, especially against the greens and I think the pink, magenta works well. The foreground is great, it’s a bit busy on the bottom left but I like the strength. Perhaps soften the darks would help linking in with the overall scene. Again there are a few more lines for branches than you need and the left side is handled better with both the under painting and combination of colours. The immediacy of the application produce sparkier colours. You could add a touch of green into some of the orange leading towards the distance to meld both green and warms together. A last point would be to include a little more contrasting light or dark further down the path, this would draw you further back balancing with the detail in the foreground.
Overall, fantastic efforts, top marks for colours and thanks so much for sharing.
